One of our main guiding principles here at Farm Hippie Farmers Market is providing quality, all-natural produce. Whether you’re planning on growing for the first time or picking produce to buy, the terms ‘organic’ and ‘all-natural’ are commonly used. But what do they actually mean, and is one better than the other?

What Does ‘Organic’ Mean?

When a product is labeled as ‘organic’, it means that it was grown or produced without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) strictly regulates this label. To be labeled as organic, a farm must follow strict guidelines and undergo regular inspections to become a certified organic producer.

Benefits of All-Natural and Organic Foods

Organic and natural foods offer several benefits. They are both free from harmful chemicals and GMOs, which can have adverse effects on our health. Organic farming practices also reduce pollution, conserve water, and improve soil quality, making them more environmentally friendly. Furthermore, organic farming promotes biodiversity and is often more beneficial for local wildlife.

Drawbacks of Organic Foods

On the flip side, certified organic foods tend to be more expensive than non-organic alternatives. This is because of the higher costs associated with organic farming practices and the smaller scale of organic farms. Additionally, becoming a certified organic grower can be a daunting, strictly regulated, and expensive process for the grower, although the benefits of being certified have their own merits once certified.

What Does ‘All-Natural’ Mean?

When a product is labeled as ‘all-natural’, it means that it contains no artificial ingredients or preservatives, and is minimally processed. However, this label is not as regulated as the ‘organic’ label. Essentially, all-natural translates to organic without the USDA’s organic stamp of approval.

Benefits of All-Natural Foods

All-natural foods can hold the same benefits as organic foods. They are often free from harmful chemicals and preservatives. Since they are minimally processed, they can also retain more of their natural nutrients. Furthermore, all-natural foods often taste fresher and more flavorful than their grocery store counterparts.

Conclusion

We carry both organic and inside Farm Hippie, and personally, we choose to call ourselves “All-Natural.” Both organic and all-natural foods have their benefits. While organic foods are strictly regulated and free from harmful chemicals, they can be more expensive and have a shorter shelf life. On the other hand, while all-natural foods can offer fresh, minimally processed options, their labeling can sometimes be confusing to customers. Ultimately it is both up to the grower and consumer to decide which method best suits their needs.
